Auch dieses Jahr findet wieder wie in den letzten beiden das Neuwerk Festival statt. Diesmal allerdings nicht mehr wie in den Jahren zuvor in Düsseldorf, sondern in der Essigfabrik in Köln. Ich habe bereits die Karten gekauft und freue mich wahnsinnig auf das LineUp. Dieses Jahr sind mit dabei:

Es wird damit das zweite mal dieses Jahr sein, dass ich VNV live sehe, und ich hoffe sehr, dass das Klima nicht so heiß und stickig wird wie damals in Frankfurt in der Batschkapp wo ich die letzten 20 Minuten nicht mehr so richtig mitbekommen habe, da mein Kreislauf dezent nach frischer Luft schrie.

Aber auch sonst freue ich mich sehr auf die anderen Bands. Sei es jetzt Solar Fake, das neue Projekt von Sven Friedrich, Sänger von Dreadful Shadows und Zeraphine, oder auch den Auftritt von S.P.O.C.K. Wer noch keine Karten hat, jetzt kaufen gehen und einfach hinkommen.

Spice up your desktop

It has been a few days since Red Hat announced its new vision of desktop virtualization by the means of the SPICE protocol. Using this protocol it is possible to channel virtualized desktop applications including movies (aka youtube flicks) and audio to a client system using ordinary networking components. Red Hat opened up a community site www.spice-space.org to develop the client and server involved.

Since I am very interested in these technologies I tried to access the site the whole weekend long, but every attempt received a timeout. Maybe the traffic was too overwhelming for the whole et.redhat.com site. After the weekend I finally got a web page, but the information presented there was not quite what I expected. Only some RPMs for Fedora 12 and a “first public release”. Where was the stuff needed to get it working on Red Hats current flagship RHEL or some of its derivates like CentOS?

So I did what everybody in this case normally does, try to find information with your favorite search engine. After some time I found the commits of the spice and qxl components to qemu-kvm subsystem supplied with RHEL 5.4. I looked directly for the RPMs on one of my virtualization systems and voila there was a qspice-libs package installed which was used by qemu-kvm. The main package of qspice was not installed per default, so this had to include the needed client package. After installing it I was quite impressed that it only consisted of documentation, and no client at all. This made me wonder, where is the client package?

After searching Red Hats Bugzilla I found a ticket referenced by other tickets, but it was inaccessible even with a valid account. Well, after asking my search engine I found the first few lines of the ticket (which still makes me wonder how Google can index a ticket not available for public viewing) revealing that the package was split. Split? Well, I had to see for myself.

I downloaded the packages sources an installed them in my buildroot. And there it was, after the build process there were the following lines:

Quite intriguing. After commenting out this line, adding the resulting binary to the %files section and rebuilding using rpmbuild -bb --define "dist .el5_4" qspice.spec" I finally got the client package. So now it was time to test the beast.

You have to test this beast by hand, since the virt-manager delivered with RHEL 5.4 does not support SPICE at all (since this all is a technology preview it is quite understandable). After figuring out the correct parameters I started a VM with CentOS 5.4 using qxl and the spice protocol. I you want to try for yourself, append the following parameters to the command line:


/usr/libexec/qemu-kvm ... -soundhw ac97 -qxl 1 -spice port=5930,disable-ticketing

This allows the client to connect without using a password on port 5930. After installing the xorg-x11-drv-qxl package in the guest VM and configuring it in xorg.conf I started up the client to see for myself what was possible and was quite surprised.

I started firefox, opened youtube and wanted to see if the system is really in lip-sync, so I chose a flick where this was quite easy to see: Sinnead O Connor singing “Nothing compares to you”.

I have to say I am quite impressed that with this unofficial version of SPICE the video was in sync. Finally a note on the hardware used. The server was a quad-core Xeon X3360 system and the client ran on a Core2Duo both connected using Gigabit Ethernet. One thing I was not able to test was the migration of the VM to another system, but since this normally works without problems I can’t wait to get my hands on some official releases of the software to see it that works just as seamless as well.

Offenbar einem weiteren Come-Back nahe gibt es neues Futter von “The Eternal Afflict”. Seit dem letzten Album “Euphoric & Demonic” (das danach erschienene Best-Of zähle ich einfach mal nicht mit) sind nunmehr fast vier Jahre vergangen und jetzt erschien in einer Neuauflage die erste EP “(Luminographic) Agony”.

Darauf befindet sich zusätzlich eine zusammen mit der QNTAL Sängerin Syrah neu eingespielte Version von “San Diego” und diversen Remixen eben dieser. Die Remixe stammen dabei von bekannten Händen wie Project Pitchfork, QNTAL oder auch Patenbrigade: Wolff.

Die neue Version selbst geht eher in die elektronische Richtung und wirkt auf mich fast schon wieder etwas zu poppig. Dennoch hat sie ihren ganz eigenen Charme nicht zuletzt durch Syrah in der Begleitung.

Ich denke die EP ist für jeden, der das Original nicht noch im Schrank stehen hat, ein absolutes Muss und die neue Version von San Diego gibt noch mal ein Tüpfelchen oben auf. Zu kaufen gibt es sie wie üblich bei INDIEtective oder Infrarot.

Oh, du schöne Weihnachtszeit…

… endlich bist du vorbei. Ok, dieses Jahr ist Weihnachten eigentlich recht erträglich gewesen. Der Trubel hat sich in Grenzen gehalten und die darauf folgenden Tage zwischen den Jahren waren auch angenehm ruhig. Selbst Silvester war dieses Jahr in angenehmer Atmosphäre.

Weihnachten, dass immer mehr zum Orgasmus der Konsumgesellschaft verkommt, habe ich zusammen mit Freundin und Familie verbracht. Das erste Geschenk habe ich mir dann am 27.12. selbst “ausgepackt” – ich war auf dem Neuwerk Festival in Düsseldorf. Zu den auftretenden Bands gehörten Kloq, Soman, Nitzer Ebb, Rotersand und mein Favorit des Abends Diary of Dreams. Diary spielte in etwa ihre CD Freak Perfume nebst ein paar anderen Stücken, was mir auch sehr gut gefallen hat. Als Abschluss gab es dann Nitzer Ebb, die ich mir allerdings nicht gegeben habe, da ich doch etwas geschafft war und noch ein paar Kilometer bis daheim fahren musste.

Die darauf folgenden Tage waren eher ruhig und die Optionen für Silvester vielfältig. Diverse Einladungen zu Parties haben es dann auch nicht einfacher gemacht zu entscheiden, was denn zu tun ist. Heimisches Warten, Warten im Wald, Warten im Schloss, eigentlich waren alle Optionen von Warten vertreten. Auf unserem für dieses Jahr letzten Montags-Stammtisch der schwarzen Szene von Koblenz habe ich dann noch eine letzte Einladung erhalten, die wir dann auch wahrgenommen haben, und so gab es: Warten bei Eddie. Es war eine sehr schöne und lustige Party und das Reinrutschen ins Jahr 2009 war angenehm sanft.

Da ich noch ein paar Tage Urlaub habe werde ich die Gelegenheit nutzen und heute Abend Richtung Bonn aufbrechen um mal wieder einen Abend in der N8schicht zu verbringen, was mir sonst nicht möglich ist.

Ach, und zu guter Letzt natürlich allen Lesern und Crawlern ein schönes neues 2009. Möge es Erfolg bringen!

… und wieder mal erneut ein Versuch, dass seit ein paar Jahren brach liegende Blog mit ein wenig Inhalt der einfachen Art zu füllen. Bekömmlich, genüsslich, nicht allzu schwer aber doch mit entsprechender Würze sollte es schmackhaft werden. Wohl denn.
